Problem Statement

Testing and improving infotainment performance is a critical stage of the development cycle of the incorporated technologies. To ship products that are not robust enough to meet the demands of today’s user has costly repercussions both immediate and long-lasting. Even wireless implementations that conform to the letter of the specification are potentially subject to nearly as many issues as there are devices with which to connect. A leading car kit manufacturer came to us wanting to verify, prior to going into production in vehicles in multiple regions around the world, that their infotainment system would be able to download over 1000 contacts correctly and within timing and integrity specification limits.

Project Scope

Given the global reach of the product, it was decided that no fewer than 200 phones would be needed to simulate comprehensive global coverage. For each region, a specific phonebook of over 1000 contacts would be loaded onto the phone, then a transfer of that data would be initiated from the phone or the infotainment system. The transfer time would be recorded, and each contact details would be verifiedтto have been transferred and displayed correctly.

Meeting the Challenge

To accurately verify the time required to transfer 1000+ contacts from multiple phones in a cost- effective way, Frontline Test Services SmartTest automated testing service was employed. With this approach, control of the phone and of the infotainment system were turned over to automated testing to verify the correct transfer of each contact across multiple languages and character sets. This also allowed the phonebook to be much more quickly and effectively transferred in multiple ways.

Testing began by loading 1000+ contacts onto a phone. Once this was done:

  • The phone was paired to the infotainment system. The time for the phonebook to transfer was measured by capturing the Bluetooth messages over-the-air and analyzing in real time.
  • A video of the infotainment screen was also captured concurrently to measure the apparent transfer time experienced by the user.
  • This was repeated for this same phone by power cycling the infotainment system to simulate entering a vehicle, and also via manual initiation.
  • Finally, the phone would be removed from the infotainment list using the robot arm and vision system.
  • The next phone would then be tested.

For each phonebook transfer, SmartTest automated testing services verified the completeness and accuracy of the transfer:

  • The vision system was used toverify that the phone book had been transferred to the infotainment system in its entirety.
  • As the robot arm scrolled through the transferred phone book, the OCR system verified that the characters (for multiple languages including Korean, Chinese, Japanese and Arabic) were displayed correctly.
  • The integrity of the phonebook was also verified using post-process data analysis of over-the-air captures of the Bluetooth packets. This ensured that an automated root cause analysis could determine if any data irregularities were contributing to any issues with the phone book transfer.

The Outcome

Because Frontline Test Services had all the phones in its device library to provide global testing coverage, the infotainment manufacturer emerged with a high degree of confidence of interoperability and performance well in advance of their product launches in each region. The manufacturer also went into production with a wealth of statistical information such as transfer time benchmarks and transfer times that would be apparent to the user, as well as the real-time analysis of the over-the-air Bluetooth communications captured between each phone and the infotainment system.
